A Day Out With Mom

Mom and baby prairie dog

Having been out of town for a couple weeks (and having missed Mother’s Day), my mom and I decided that it was high time for a ‘girls day out’. So, on Friday morning, we rolled out of bed (a little later than expected), and headed downtown. The weather has been unseasonably warm here, and we decided that we couldn’t let this lovely weather go to waste and headed to the Detroit Zoo.

Host Home Etiquette

host home etiquette

I’ve got a big cross-country trip coming up in about two weeks (which you may have read about here) that I’m really excited about. For cost saving purposes, the group that I’m going with will be splitting up and staying with host homes almost every night of our 15-day trip. It’s no secret that housing can be one of the most costly expenses while on vacation, and staying at host homes, or trying programs like couchsurfing, are great options.

Take Me Out To The Ballgame

One way to really get to know a city is to go see one of their sporting events. There seems to be a sense of camaraderie in a city while they are all coming together against a ‘common enemy’, and there are always more people wandering around on game days, which can help ease any anxiety about exploring alone. Also, you can usually find reasonably priced tickets to these events if you aren’t too picky about where you sit.

Travel Plans

I have been telling a lot of people about my blog lately, so, naturally, their first question tends to be “well what is it about?” and I’ve had to go into my speech about how “it’s a travel blog. But I’m not currently traveling, so it’s kind of just a general blog? But about travel? Kind of? Until I have the time to actually travel” and that’s not really cutting it. So, I’ve decided to make a post sharing the traveling adventures that I have coming up! This way, people can know what they should expect to be reading about on the blog.

Chorus Tour

For those of you that don’t know, I am a part of the A Cappella Chorus at my college, and this year we are touring to The Ascending Voice IV conference, which is located way out in beautiful Malibu, California. We are staying there for a few days, so expect lots of beach pictures. We are also stopping along the way in places like Colorado, Oklahoma, and Nebraska, as well the Grand Canyon and Las Vegas. You can expect some tips and tricks on surviving long bus rides as well as proper ‘host home’ etiquette.

Road Trip to Florida

A little later in the summer, Ryan and I are planning to go on a road trip down south. The details haven’t all been solidified yet, but we are hoping to stop along the way in Ohio (hopefully at Cedar Point, if we can swing it), Nashville, and Atlanta before hitting the beach for a few days. More details on this trip, and how we are planning for it, to come.

Camping in Canada

Another trip that Ryan and I are planning for this summer is a quick camping trip up in Canada. Luckily, Canada is only a few hours away, and a Canadian camping trip is the best way for us to get some more budget-friendly international travel under our belts in preparation for a bigger trip to come…
We plan to see some of the beautiful landscapes that Canada in known for (hopefully by kayak) and share that with you! You can expect to see some posts about preparing for budget-friendly camping and beginner international travel.

Royal Oak Weekend

Since Ryan and I are planning a couple of big trips this summer, and our budget is still pretty tight, we are hoping to go exploring a little closer to home. One of my favorite places, locally, is Royal Oak. The city is full of culture and has a very interesting vibe, plus there’s no way that you can run out of things to do. Some of my favorite restaurants and shops are located in Royal Oak, as well as a super cute indie movie theater that Ryan and I frequently stop at. Bonus, the Detroit Zoo is located right down the street!

Family Road Trip

I had some separate international plans of my own for this summer that ended up not working out, but, because of this, I’m able to tag along with my parents on their summer trip! I don’t quite know all of the details on this trip yet either, but I do know that we are supposed to spend some time in New York City and head over to enjoy the east coast. I’m sure we will visit a lot of family friendly vacation spots (which hopefully includes some fresh seafood somewhere on the coast).

Possible adventures that may be happening

Of course nothing is set in stone, and plans have a way of working out in unexpected ways. The plans that I’ve already mentioned are not all solidified as of right now, but are all very likely to happen. I also have some other adventures that are more up-in-the-air for the summer that I will mention below.

Summer Camp

I’ve applied to be a camp counselor this summer at multiple camps. Some of the camps that I’ve applied to are in the area, while some are a couple hours away. No matter what, camp always seems to be an adventure, and hopefully I will have some time to explore while I’m there.

As well as camp counseling, I’ve been given some opportunity to go out and work in Chicago for a couple of weekends this summer. If this works out, I will have a place to stay and be able to explore the Windy City, while conserving enough money to make my other plans happen as well.

Virginia Beach

There’s a chance that I might find myself out in the Virginia Beach area this summer. For some reason, it keeps popping up within different conversations, which I find is usually a sign that I should do something. I’ve got a couple of friends staying out in that area over the summer, and my best friend has family out there. In years past, there has been talk of a white water rafting trip out there, so who knows, maybe this summer it’ll come together.

With Love,
